7 days left

Oh my goodness.... This time next week I will be at the airport waiting for my flight to the DR. I have come so far and just have a few loose ends to tie up. I have a few items in the mail to add to my suitcase. I need to check with my cell phone provider to insure no surprise bills. I need to send payment to my Doctor and possibly my RH. I am still on the fence in terms of getting my teeth whitened while I am there.

Obese Issue

Ok... here is where I am. I need to lose at least 6 pounds to be under 30BMI. I only have 8 days to do it. I am disappointed in myself but I am not going to quit. I am off for summer break. So I plan on eating all protein shakes and yogurt for the next week. I am going to enlist the help of my husband and get this done. I have worked to hard to get so close. I do not want to not have the doctor of my choice. He knows me and I feel very comfortable using him.
So... That is what I am dealing with right now. On the upside I have been packing and only have few items left to get.

S.T.E.P. Enrollment

I made a move in the direction of my dream. LOL. I registered with the US Embassy and the STEP.

So they know that I am traveling to Santo Domingo for medical tourism. I also made my last 2 doctors appointments before my surgery. Super excited. Praying for good news in terms of my hemo as it was only 11.7. I have been diligent in taking my Integra (prescription). So I am hopeful.

Tracking my body changes

So many thoughts go through my mind and I am so glad that I am blogging and can update, add, and subtract info out there about myself and this journey.

I want  to get to at least 170# before my surgery. This accountability will keep me on track.

Update 3/14/15
I scale is moving down, now I need to keep being consistent. I am training for Climb Atlanta, which is in 1 month. I also bought a groupon for 1 month of unlimited CrossFit classes. I feel like I am making the right moves. Time will tell.

Having High Hemo

We all know the importance of having a high hemoglobin level before surgery.

Here is what I have researched and found to be ways to raise and/or keep your hemo level high.

My hemo level was....9.3 and that was very upsetting. But I am moving forward to get my levels up.

Here is a chart of the multivitamins and minerals I have started taking to get my hemo levels up. I am possibly going to switch of the Iron tabs for a prescription form my PP.

Throughout this journey I have a ton of questions. Questions for my doctor, my recovery house, and of my fellow surgery dolls. So I will use this page to post the questions I have and the answers I received from

Dr. Fernandez-Goico

Feb. 20
How many surgeries do you do in a day?  You only one that day. I only do one surgery if it a combined surgery.
Can I send you or Karel my list of what to pack to make sure that I have everything that I need? Send it to Karel as I have no idea if you would be missing something. Lots of things in the girl department that I don;t know much about.

Feb. 17
Do you provide compression socks? Yes we do. Open toes.
Should I get a back up pair?
Do you think my belly button will move with my tummy tuck or will you make me a new one?
Can I be heart shaped.  I'm sorry but whoever performs that cannot be a board certified plastic surgeon.

Feb. 14
How many weeks do I have to wait before I can drive? 4 weeks before driving
Workout--like walking or elliptical? 4-6 weeks for the elliptical, let's see how you recover.

Feb. 10
What are "dog ears'? How common are they? Can I do anything to prevent them? Dog ears should not happen ever. They are excess skin left in the border of the incisions and they can be corrected immediately during the surgery.  I have have 'dog ears'.

Feb. 3
How could/would my cycle effect my cycle/ What and how far ahead should I take additional iron? Start now, 300mg daily. You hemo goes down a little with your period.  Have Vitamin C separate 1000mg as well and stop 2 weeks before surgery.

Feb. 2
How long does botox last? About 4-6 months.

Feb. 1
What tummy tuck procedure do you usually use? I use several different techniques to prevent seromas. For example suturing the inner fat layer to the muscle to close the dissection among other techniques. I use a special drainage system which theoretically cannot get clogged.

Also do you/can you severe my eye brow frown lines while I am getting other procedures?   It is temporary and I stopped doing them because//long term effect is not good.

Jan. 25
Can I instead take the lipo on my thighs(instead of my flanks and lower back)? Don't worry I'll do your thighs as well.

Jan. 21
how strict the 14 day rule? I would recommend 10-14 days. But let's say your a slow healer...You'll go home without being completely recovered.

mid-February Check in

My oh my... I have made great progress in my journey. My deposit has been sent to my doctor and my recovery house. I also went to my primary care physician(PCP) and had an EKG and a complete blood work up. My PCP is not fully supportive of my trip to the Dominican Republic(DR) for surgery(sx). However, she is not refusing to help me prepare for the journey.

I got my blood work back and it is not where I want it to be. I need to be above 13 and it is currently at 9.3.

My Dr. has suggested an iron supplementation and I am open to taking it. I am also going to take my multi-vitamin, folic acid, and b12.

This diagnosis has opened my eyes to why I feel the way I do.  I read an article from Women's Health magazine.

The symptoms they listed in the

10 Signs You Have an Iron Deficiency

article include:

  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Apathy
  • Breathlessness
  • Pale skin
  • TRouble doing your workout
  • Crazy sore muscles
  • Brittle nails
  • Frequent infections
  • Pink or red urine

I can easily identify with 8 of 10 of these. The most surprising symptom was apathy. It has to do with the nuerotransmitters... Crazy right.

My weight loss isn't happening and it is my own fault. I have to be so much more diligent when it comes to what and how i eat. I also need to amp up my physical fitness.

Pre-op Guidelines

Yay for me.

I have sent my deposit and it has been received. My surgery is scheduled with Dr. Fernandez-Goico on June 12th. I am beyond excited. I am now going to secure a recovery house and shop for my tickets. So excited.

I got my email confirmation of my surgery date, my account summery, and  a medical history form. I love how professional his office is.

Update on 2/08/2015
I have sent my deposit to Serenity RH. I am excited to have the behind me. I feel great about choosing them They have been very easy to reach and the reviews I have read on RS and FB have been very promising. They also come recommended by Dr. FG.

Next update: I took a trip out of town for work. They overbooked the flight so I volunteered to take a later flight in exchange for a flight voucher. So now I have $500 flight cash. That makes my roundtrip ticket range from $50-80. How cool is that...?

I am currently taking a daily vitamin, Vitamin C, an Iron pill, with a stool softener. I go to my PCP on Thursday and I plan on getting blood work to get a baseline on my numbers.

Having a quality compression garment is crucial to the success of my surgery. I will definitely follow my surgeons lead and hopefully find a great place to get my fajas from.

Post Op Care

My mind is always running in a million different directions. Lately, it is about Post Op care and issues.

I read a blog or maybe it was a FB post talking about getting massages when she was back in the states. So I will start looking to the things I need to do post-op to be successful in my journey.

Some of the things I think I will need include:

Lymphatic Massages

If I am missing anything let me know. I want to be as prepared as possible.

Goico Correspondence

One of the main reason I was drawn to using Dr. FG

No, the multiple patients discount is a 15% discount and the seed patient is a 10% discount. They cannot be added one with the other You can secure your quote and date with the 10% discount. For the moment your surgery buddy books her surgery date close to yours, i will update your balance with the 15% multiple disc.

The thing is that the PreOp appointment is a full and complete evaluation before surgery, not only by DR. FG but also by a Cardiologist, a Blood Work technician, a Chest Xray. So you will have to be here in Santo Domingo in the morning, to fulfilled the 24 hrs requirement before get in surgery and be in our office at 11.30 am.

After you pay for your deposit, your quoted price is assured for whenever you wish to have your surgery.

Payment for Services
For the  surgery date deposit, we only accept Western Union or MoneyGram  because this money is payed to the clinic.

Another option we have is PayPal, and with this option you can use your  credit card, but PayPal will charge you with a 5.4% of transaction fee. If you prefer this option, let me know and I'll send you your invoice.

For Western Union and MoneyGram you'd need the following information:
- Name: Luis Alejandro Fernandez Goico
- City/Country: Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
- Amount: US$300.00
- Currency: US$

IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure that the deposit is in US currency. Some  patients have deposited US$300 but Western Union changes the exchange  fare to a much lower one, and it ends up being less.

The information we'd need from you is:
- Complete name of sender
- City/State/Country from where is being sent
- Transaction code

You can do it from your home by clicking on this link:

For the rest of the payment, if you do not want to come with all that  cash, you can use our Bank of America account if you'd like you could do
a wire transfer (at least 2 weeks before your surgery). The only thing
is  that we charge the International Transfer fee that will be charged
to us which is US$65 dollars.

Bank of America Savings Account:
- Account under Name: Luis Fernandez
- Account #: 383012295575

Baez Quote

So I heard back from Dr. Australia Baez.
Her price was reasonable but did not address my desire for a breast list.  So that was frustrating, but after a 1/2 dozen quotes I have gotten it is never as simple or direct as I would like it to be. Her prices does not include a recovery house which is fine... I like the idea of finding my own based on my research.

Thank you for thinking of me for an evaluation of plastic surgery, for realization
of all
the surgeries you requested the most important thing is that you must be healthy and the cardiologist must approve that we can perform all procedures. Price  for the surgeries that you are requesting, tummy tuck, liposculture to abdomen  waist, sides, back, inner thighs and Brazilian butt lift is US$ 3700 dollars, which includes:

-evaluation by plastic surgeon
-Cardiovascular evaluation (any other evaluation needed by pulmonologist or any specialist is not included)
- Laboratory exams
-Overnight stay in the clinic (only for the day of your surgery )
-First compressive garment
-Free of charge follow ups (transportation not included)
-Medication post-surgery (antibiotics and analgesics)
- Lymphatic drain massages and ultrasound massages are not included, cost is 300 dollars extra
- Recovery house is not included in the quote

You  need to weigh less than 200 pounds in order to get surgery

You can  include a medical insure for complications after a plastic surgery, it covers
all services you need in and out of country, it costs from 150-200 USD
depending on the amount of surgery you will get. If you have any clinical
condition you must obtain clearance from your doctor, if you smoke you
must quit two months before surgery and have clearance of your pulmonologist
The amount of fat transfer to your buttocks depends on how many cc can be
extracted with liposuction. Your  results also depend on your hemoglobin level if you want to get excellent  results you really have to be healthy and no anemia and please ask your primary
can doctor to take some blood test like glycaemia, full blood cell count and
creatinine at least to know if you can have all surgeries done. You can begin
to take vitamins once your surgery appointment is near (Iron, Vitamin C and B12
plus Folic acid are very helpful).

Important info: Your  date for surgery is important because I work from Monday to Friday (days for
surgery are from Tuesday to Friday). I usually have one patient per day, you  also have to arrive one day before surgery to be evaluated and have lab work done, and if you are arriving early it is better for you because lab tests can  be done from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm.

Medication  included in you package are antibiotics, analgesics and gastric protection
medication, all drugs provided are given to take by mouth, but you will have to  buy Enoxaparin, water pill and creams for bruises (arnica gel) and any other
medication not previously included, medicines aren’t expensive here so you will  spend around 200 dollars. Massages are not included. You should bring compression socks to wear them after surgery.

You can also bring your own medication; here is a list of basic meds

  • Augmentin 1gr every twelve hours for ten days (antibiotic)
  • Omeprazole or any other antacid for 5 days one every day
  • Arnica gel
  • Medication for nausea
  • Water pill
  • Lovenox 40 mg every day for 7 days
  • Medication for itching (not every patient but some feel itching)
  • Any strong medication for pain like percoset every 6 to 8 hours for 5 days

Your  compressive garment included is a Mariae’s brand item if you want one more  garment cost 120-150 dollars. You will need to buy a stage two faja 5-7 days  after your surgery so if you want you can bring one or buy it here in a faja store.

I work  with a team, my cardiologist will evaluate you and my anesthesiologist will examine you and discuss what type of anesthesia suits you right, you might have epidural block or general anesthesia. Anesthesiologist and cardiologist have the last word about how many procedures can be done safely on you.

If you have a tummy tuck, we include with a tummy tuck muscle repair. If you are aiming to have a breast augmentation, there are several brands of breast  implants but all are silicone gel cohesive, texturized implants (Silimed, Eurosilicone, and Donasis) depending on the brand you choose then your quote  might be lower or higher, (Silimed is the most expensive brand as they have the
approval of FDA ). In the quote you receive we generally  include Eurosilicone implants for your surgery.

We are  located in Santo Domingo (capital of the country), Dominican Republic; the
nearest airport is Las Americas International Airport (SDQ). I work at
Instituto de Cirugia Especializada, the clinic is placed in Gazcue neighborhood
(Address is Bolivar Avenue 208, suite 405, 4th floor), and it is near to hotels
and colonial zone; my cellphone number is 18098908143 and office number
18096899342 if you can’t reach me at this numbers you can call my husband Dr.
Rodriguez so he can answer your questions, he is available in the morning from
9am to 1 pm
. If you need  transportation or a recovery house, there are several in Santo Domingo areas; I  don’t work with an exclusive recovery house and i don’t have a preferred one,
these recovery houses are near clinic: Yasmin, Real recovery Armonia, Maria and
Daisy. If you stay in a recovery house you will have most of services you need
in just one place, most of recovery house include airport pick up if you need a
taxi driver to pick you up at the airport I can included but you need to
requested at least 3 days before your appointment, transportation included is
from Las Americas international airport to my office only. You can stay in a
hotel but you will need to come with someone else so that person can take care
of you. You will need to come to my office for follow up 2-3 times during your
stay in the country.

This is a link in Google maps with the location of my clinic.

You will have to stay in Santo Domingo from 10 -14 days depending on the surgeries you will
get done. You will be able to get back to your work in two weeks (average). I
know some English but I can’t speak fluently, my assistant will help me in your
evaluation to have a better communication.

Quotes are good for 6 months after that cost might change or some items could not be
I just  accept payment in cash (US dollars) for your surgery. It is necessary to deposit to my bank account to lock a surgery date unless you are requesting a
date in a week or less, you can do a deposit of 200 USD to lock your date and
this deposit is not refundable. Once you do a deposit that amount is
deducted from your quote.
Once you deposit the money you can send me an email and i will confirm that everything is ok. Questions or doubts
about the price or the elements included in your surgery package just email and
I will reply as fast as I can but please try to send all of them in just an email in order to make things easier for me as I receive several emails in just
one day.

Fernandez Goico Quote

Here is the quote from dr. Fernandez Goico.

I have attached the quotes for the following procedures (PDF format):

1. Mommy Makeover + BBL

Dr. FG gave you our "Seed Patient Discount". This is a 10% discount we
give to patients that would help spread Dr. Fernandez Goico's work in
their community after the surgery.

Remember, if you are viewing this email through a smartphone or a
tablet, the files are usually at the bottom.

This quote includes:
- Cardiology checkup
- Pre-op labs
- Post-op meds (basic)
- Chest X-ray
- Compression garments (1 x faja and 1 x bra)
- Clinic (one night)

Does not include:
- Recovery house
- Lymphatic Drainage Massages (very recommended but not mandatory)
- Post-op insurance (costs US$150 and covers up to US$15,000 of any
type of complication)
- Deep Vein Thrombosis and Thromboembolism Prevention Shots: 7
(insuline like) shots needed the first week after surgery (approx.
cost: US$140 for all shots included)

The Recovery Houses that we recommend are:

- (TOP CHOICE) Arelis Ureña Recovery House (Price US$120/night):
belongs to a nurse that used to work with us and now has that business
of taking care of patients 24/7, with transportation to/from airport
and medical checkups included. Her name is Arelis Urena and her  numbers
are cellphone (809)299-3797 and work phone (809)732-3797, in  case you
want to give her a call and clear your doubts. Her price is  higher than
regular Recovery Houses, but it's located in one of the  best
neighbourhoods (Piantini) here in Santo Domingo, she offers  personal
24/7 care of our patients and she speaks english very well  (which is
considered a big plus by our international patients). Here is their fb

- (TOP CHOICE) Serenity Recovery House (Price US$80/night): our
patients have found very positive their stay here. One of the top
things they have is that everyone speaks english well, and their
accommodations are practically new. Here is their website:

- Real Armonia Recovery House: Some of our patients have also used
"Real Armonia", which has a much lower price (US$85.00/day) but is not
as private as the one I mentioned before. A good point is that it is
the closest recovery house to our clinic (about 5 blocks away) and our
patients have mentioned it is a very good house as well.

- Angela Recovery House (US$70/night): another choice used by our
patients frequently, which has very personalized attention. It offers
transportation and many of the features mentioned with the others, but
their location is pretty far from our office (like a 30-45 mins  drive).
Also, they have shared bathrooms which some patients find it  to be a
very negative point.

- Tropical Recovery House (Price
US$85/night)( one of our  patient
is staying there right now. She's the first patient we've had  staying
there but she is very pleased with their services. Their phone  number
is: (809)595-3109.

If you find another house of your choice, please let us know which
would you be interested in as there are plenty that have lower costs
but are not good choices.

The recovery period for this surgery that Dr. FG requires the patient
to stay in Dominican Rep. is at least 14 days.

In order for us to save a date for the surgery, the medical center
requires a US$300.00 downpayment. This value is deducted from the
surgery total and is refundable only if the surgery is cancelled by  Dr.
Fernández Goico. It can be done through money transferring  companies
like Western Union and other money wiring services  (MoneyGram, etc).
This deposit also saves your quoted price, meaning  no matter when you
decide to undergo this procedure, the price will be  as stated in the
quote's Total.

If you decide to have this surgery with Dr. FG, I'd also need a
specific date of arrival (Dr. FG requires that the patient is in
dominican soil for at least 24 hours before the surgery) in order for
me to create your surgery chronogram. This way you can organize
yourself with time on how post-op check-ups work, etc. Also, Dr. FG
requires his patients to be at least 24 hrs in dominican soil before
undergoing surgery (for matters of patient's health safety).

IMPORTANT NOTE: In case you decide to have this  surgery with Dr. FG, I
highly recommend that you save your date as  soon as possible. We give
priority to our international patients and, I'm usually able to move
local patients' dates, but I need to do  it with time.

medical subject. For any medical doubt, you can write to Dr. FG at any
time to You can also call him or whatsapp
him at his cellphone at +1 809 801-7900.
